An important attribute for any musical artist or band with hopes of attaining longevity is first to define their respective style and then to incorporate variation as the music matures. Mewithoutyous latest release, “Brother, Sister,” follows this formula to near perfection. The first track, “Messes of Men,” will perhaps have avid fans of the band slightly surprised to find that lead vocalist Aaron Weiss, known for his mastery of the spoken verse, is in fact singing. But this album cannot be stereotyped based on the first song. The third track of the album, “Wolf Am I And Shadow,” blasts into a barrage of gritty guitars, a commanding beat, and the unmistakable vocals that put this band on the map. Still another song, “Yellow Spider,” is complete with an accordion, an acoustic guitar, and the gentle sound of Weiss’ quivering singing. From start to finish, “Brother, Sister” is a musical maze, winding in and out of the aggressive, urgent style of past mewithoutyou albums while uncovering new elements of their growing sound.
