Multi-platinum, Grammy winners Jars of Clay have often claimed that their records begin with a question. The group's latest studio release, Who We Are Instead, tackles the issue of who we are truly called to be as Christians in a world that is not our home. Gracefully balancing the mirror themes of joy and suffering, the band maintains their distinctive harmonies and signature guitar sounds while musically exploring gospel, blues, rock and organic influences. Primarily self-produced in Jars of Clay's own Sputnik Studios, the project also employs the talents of Ron Aniello (Lifehouse, Guster, BNL) as well as friends Ashley Cleveland, Ken Coomer (Wilco) and Ben Mize (Counting Crows).

Another work of art
July 27, 2004

The first week I owned this CD, positively nothing else went in my player for longer than ten minutes before "Who We Are Instead" went right back!
The album heads toward a great start with "Sunny Days": a happy energetic song that will make you want to burst out singing it in front of your friends, no matter what you'll sound like! It proceeds to please the ear with encouraging lyrics and Jars of Clay's familiar sounds that CCM fans have come to love throughout the years. From peppy "Sunny Days" to the encouraging "Faith Enough" right down to the simple but uplifting message in "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet"...
It is a truly amazing work of art ...

Great CD

Jars of Clay releases another awesome album that is unlike many rock CDs around at this time. It opens with an upbeat \"Sunny Days\" that will get stuck in your head for hours. That song is followed by many other great ones. This album somehow always lifts my mood and helps me to focus on what really should be important in life - God and how He is going to change our lives. Go ahead and buy this album, and you won.

Good, but different

This CD is a very good CD, with songs you could sing along to every day. However, it is not the typical Jars of Clay CD, and doesn't seem to carry their style except in Show You Love and I'm In the Way. It is much different, but still a must have.

This was my first album that I bought by this band and I really fell in love with their awesome style of music. It's really quite soothing;
combining that style of music with meaningful lyrics makes the outcome fantastic. I will surely continue buying their albums!

I was very pleased with this CD, as it represents an upbeat, artistic and uplifting theme that carries through the whole album.
"Sunny Days", "Sing", "My Heavenly", "Show You Love", and "Trouble Is" are some of the best songs on the album.
I definitely recommend this album.

Simply put, this cd is pretty awesome. There is alot of variety in the music and it sounds great. Unfortunately, nothing like the song Flood. They slowed it down a lil' bit I think. Buy it!

Remarkable

This album portrays soulful elegance in its entirety. Soothing-yet-penetrating lyrics captivate the mind and soul, and perfect instrumentation and rhythmic balance combine to unify the work while maintaining distinctiveness between tracks. Who We Are Instead is a superb depiction of the God-given talent manifest in Dan Haseltine and every life invested in Jars Of Clay. Their hearts long for God throughout the album, granting sincerity to every word sung. A genuine inspiration, this album is highly recommended by me for anyone looking for a splendid musical journey for the spirit that is absolutely worth taking.

With its mix of Country-Blues-Pop-Rock-Gospel, Jars pulls off one of the most innovative and incredible albums to date. There is so much in this record that one listen simply will not suffice. After repeated listens, not only do you discover the depth of this album, but it gets better and better. Amazing!
