Like electro-pop pioneers before him like Kraftwek, John Foxx, and early Human League, Joy Electric's latest effort entitled, "Hello Mannequin"is electronic music made the way it was originally intended, with a slight nod towards the future. Written, produced and recorded by Ronnie Martin at the band's own Electric Joy Toy Company, the album is being completed entirely on a vintage Roland System 100 analog modular synthesizer system. With no computers, drum machines, samplers or traditional instrumentation, the classic songwriting influences that shape Martin's work also add a slight bit of tension to the intricate synth programming.

Hello, This is no Mannequin

I have always been a fan of Joy Electric and electronic music in general. So, for me, I have enjoyed JE's new cd. Most people, esp. those who really don't dig JE's electronic style and Martin's voice, will likely be turned off. Also, Ronnie's lyrics are not as clear as one may want, his songwriting reminds me of his brother who fronts Starflyer 59, another genius band, but remains some of the best stuff in the JE catalog. Don't get me wrong, Mannequin is far from his best work but nevertheless, it is a great cd for those who love electronic music.
