Above the Golden State is one of the best new bands to come out. Sound of Your Name has a great driving guitar that makes you take notice musically. Then the lyrics catch you.

Think Ben Folds meets Relient K that’s what I did *grin*. Throw in a bit of Starfield, Josh Wilson, and the West Coast flair that’s hinted at in the band’s name, and you’ve got a pretty good idea of “Above the Golden State.”
Lead vocalist Michael Watson said, “I know the only thing that carries on to eternity is God being glorified in and through us by the grace of Jesus, so we’ll put all our energy toward that.” Along with band members Tim Aylward and Brook Mosser, Watson evidently seeks—first and foremost—to point listeners to God. Whether through the lyrics of “Streets,” a thought-provoking song that recognizes the desperate need for God’s love to “change the world,” or the slightly more upbeat and worshipful “Sound of Your Name,” I really appreciate the band’s honesty and commitment to Christ.

Above the Golden State is the perfect rebuttal to a musical world full of cookie cutter rock bands and would-be teen idols. With power pop anthems such as “I’ll Love You So” and “Sound of Your Name” to the more sober thoughtful melodies of “Love” and “Real to Reel.” Any fan of the seriousness of Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So” to the fun tunes of The Beatles’ “Can’t Buy Me Love” will enjoy listening to this album.
Above the Golden State will soon be your own personal favorite. Get the album and give them a listen. You won’t regret it!
